Green Card Immigrant Visa Applicants

Criteria

Immigrant (Permanent) Visa Processing aka Green Card Processing

For many immigrant visa applicants, obtaining your green card is a 4-step process:

First, USCIS approves a petition filed by a close family member or US employer. This step occurs within the United States.

Second, once the petition is approved, the file is forwarded to the National Visa Center who assigns a case number and instructs applicants to log in to the Consular Electronic Application Center and pay an online visa fee.

Third, once visa fees are paid, applicants must complete Form DS-260, and in some cases an Affidavit of Support, online through the CEAC.

Fourth, once these 3 steps are complete, the US Embassy in the applicant's home country will provide instructions for obtaining an immigration medical exam outside the U.S. and schedule an interview.

At the interview, the consular officer will ask questions to determine whether s/he believes that your reason for wanting to immigrate (marriage or employment) is valid. The officer will also determine if you are inadmissible to the United States based on your criminal history or a history of US immigration violations, as well as other factors.
