U.S. Suspends Student Visa Interviews Amid Plans for Broader Vetting
On May 27, 2025, the Trump administration issued a sweeping directive to all U.S. embassies and consulates: immediately suspend the scheduling of new interviews for international student and exchange visitor visas (F, M, and J categories).
This is not a targeted measure. The administration has confirmed that expanded social media vetting will apply to all student visa applicants—not just those previously flagged for political activism.
Under this new policy, consular officers will evaluate social media activity across platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok looking for any posts, comments, or content that poses a threat to the national security of the U.S.
If you’re planning to apply for a U.S. student visa this policy may impact your timeline.
